Betazoids
Betazed is a full member world of the United Federation of Planets. Its people are the empathic Betazoids. Unlike the Vulcans, who are touch-telepaths, Betazoids can only sense feelings and emotions in others rather than actual thoughts. Certain individuals do develop perfect telepathy but this leads them to experience considerable discomfort from the unruly nature of other minds. Betazoids are physically identical to hums, except for the black irises of their eyes. Their empathic abilities make them clever negotiators because they are able to sense when those around them are bluffing.

The Borg
Name: N/A
Occupation: Total Domination
Position: Borg Collective
Training: Enhance Humanoids
Race: The Borg

First encountered by the Federation in 2265, when the entity known as Q sent the U.S.S. Enterprise spinning into the Delta Quadrant, the Borg have proved to be a constant threat to the Federation every since. The Enterprise's first encounter with the Borg served two purposes which the Federation would have chosen to avoid: it proved to the Federation the existence of the ruthless and warlike race that was more than a match for even Starfleet's flagship, and, more worryingly, it alerted the Borg to the existence of the Federation: a group of planets which, if assimilated, would provide the Borg with powerful new technology.

The anticipated Borg attack came in late 2366, when a lone Borg vessel entered Federation space, heading for Earth. Enterprise-D captain Jean-Luc Picard was captured at the beginning of this offensive and was assimilated into the Borg's collective consciousness, where, as Locutus of Borg, he provided crucial guidance during the Borg attack, assisting in the destruction of 39 Starfleet ships and 11000 Federation lives. The onslaught was only stopped when, following the rescue of Picard, a destructive computer command implanted into the Borg collective consciousness successfully destroyed the Borg ship in Earth orbit. Since the battle of Wolf 359, at least three more Borg ships have entered Federation territory, with the most disturbing incident being the latest recorded. Here, a lone Borg cube journeyed to Earth then, dodging a Federation attack again led by Picard, burrowed back through time attempting to assimilate Earth at the point of First Contact (where mankind first demonstrated successful faster-than-light travel abilities). However, the Enterprise was able to follow the Borg ship back through time and thwart the attempt.

Although the Borg's primary goal may appear to be acquisition for its own sake, they do not harbour any such Ferengi-like avarice: rather, their primary purpose is to improve the quality of life in the galaxy by providing other life-forms the benefit of being part of the Borg collective. The collective structure is the key element which gives the Borg their strength as a group: although each individual Borg is able to function as an independent unit, all Borg are in constant contact with the other members of collective, and are singularly focused on achieving the goals of the collective, even if it entails their sacrifice as an individual. This constant communication means the Borg can adapt as a collective from the experiences of the individual.

Hirogen Race
Race: Hirogen
Status: Delta Quadrant
Itinerants Culture: Hunt and Trophy
Based Assessment: Extremely Dangerous

Operating throughout the Delta Quadrant, the Hirogen are a race dedicated to the Hunt. Travelling in ships often staffed only by two hunters, the Hirogen seek out and hunt down members of other species who have been separated from their companions. Compared to a human, the Hirogen are giant and muscular, sometimes approaching almost three metres in height, with the ability to snap a human neck easily. Hirogen travel in groups of two or more because a companion is required to confirm a hunter's kill. Kills bring trophies, also called "relics", and unusual trophies bring status in Hirogen culture. A long, coiled human intestines, for example, would make one Alpha Hirogen "envied by men and pursued by women". Although it has been said that the Hirogen are a crude species with only their size to make them formidable, they have occasionally demonstrated the intelligence and weaponry skills to trap species even the Borg could not control.

The Kazon
The Kazon are the first group of aliens encountered by the U.S.S. Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. They are an aggressive, humanoid race of space faring plunderers who have become one of the leading powers in the region. Water is a highly prized commodity here and the Kazon will do everything possible to take possession of any they find.

The Kazon Sects
The Kazon cilvilisation is divided up into approximately eighteen sects but this number continually changes because of the violent power struggles which take place between them. For the same reason, the volume of space under each sect's jurisdiction also alters. Training starts at an early age for the Kazon. As soon as a boy is able to protect his younger siblings, he accompanies the warriors. In order to mark the symbolic transition to manhood, the boy is ordered to stay an enemy when the adults consider him ready. Success, or death in the attempt, earns him a sect name. Failure results in his dishonorable execution to warn other children of the price of incompetence.

Krenim Race
Race: Krenim
Disposition: Ruthless and Arrogant
Societal Structure: Militaristic Imperium
Technology: Chronatom Based

Occupying their sector of the Delta Quadrant with three other advanced races, the Krenim used their deadly weapons based on temporal science to build a militaristic Imperium and dominate their neighbours. A generation before Voyager encountered the Krenim, the technologically advanced but non-confrontational Zahl fought the Krenim, taking back the planets that had been annexed, dismantling the military forces, and restoring peace to the sector. As the Krenim Imperium was dismantled rather than eradicated, surviving Krenim forces were able to build a ship armed with a temporal incursion weapon, designed to eradicate entire species from history. A single use of this weapon on the Krenim homeworld was enough to remove the Zahl inhabited worlds across 5000 parsecs of space.

'Miss' Q
The female Q, encountered by Janeway's crew, displays the same extreme arrogance, viciously aiming insults at the humanoids, calling them narrow little beings, intellectually challenged and declaring their existence pitiful. Tossing her beautiful head of lustrous red hair, she pouts and denounces Voyager as a rickety barge, manned by a half witted crew. She insists that her superiority is not a complex, but a fact and proclaims her four billion year old relationship with Q to be an eternal association.

Mari Race
Race: Mari
Special Attributes: Telepathic
Crime Rate: Virtually Zero
Disposition: Peaceful

Ostensibly a peaceful race of telepaths, the Mari have learned how to maintain order in their society by adopting an unusual view of violence. They believe that violent actions are caused by violent thoughts, and the person responsible for any act of violence is the person who first had the violent thought that caused the action. This means that a person can be guilty of murder even if he or she has never met the victim. Such a view of violence is pragmatic for a telepathic race where antisocial thoughts can spread quickly and easily. Fortunately, Mari law enforcement techniques are similarly progressive. Rather than punish those who harbour violent thoughts with incarceration, the violent image is medically erased from the person's memory, enabling the potential criminal to be safely returned to society.

Nyrian Race
Nyrians practise a novel method of acquiring technology and possessions from other species: they take over alien starships by replacing the crew one by one. Typically, the process begins with the substitution of a single Nyrian for one member of the alien crew. The Nyrian claims complete bewilderment at the substitution, and this ruse is maintained by the following arrivals until it is too late for the remainder of the alien crew to halt the takeover. This method of acquisition is tailored to exploit the functionality of Nyrian technology, specifically the translocator device.

Although the translocator is capable of transporting matter over distances much greater than would ordinarily be achieved by standard matter transporters, it does so at the cost to the amount of matter which can be transported. Specifically, the translocator can only handle two lifeforms per transport cycle: sending one to the destination, and bringing one back to the base point.

Although this may seem a trivial point given the speed of transport, the translocator also requires a period of regeneration before the next transport can take place. Recorded instances place this regeneration period at around nine minutes twenty seconds. Alien lifeforms which are fetched from a distant point are automatically stored in a self-contained biosphere, tailored to their cultural and physical requirements, and holographically fashioned to resemble a suitable planetary surface.

The Maquis
A long and bloody war between the Federation and the Cardassians was finally settled when a peace treaty was negotiated circa stardate 47751.2. In order for the treaty to be successful, both sides conceded territory which has become known as the demilitarised zone. Petty squabbles between the settlers, from both sides who occupy the zone, have grown over the years, until an insurgent group of Federation colonists named themselves The Maquis, around stardate 47802.3, and began to wage a terrorist campaign against all Cardassians.

The Ocampan
The Ocampa are a peaceful race of subterranean people whose individual lifespans are less than a human decade. Ancient rumours suggest that they once had highly developed paranormal capabilities which have now lapsed through lack of use.

The Q
The Q are immensely powerful extradimensional entities, each referred to as Q. They are immortal, displaying absolute control over space and time, enabling them to travel to any corner of the universe at any point in time with a snap of their fingers. The Q encountered by the Enterprise D exhibited childlike petulance and mischievous playfulness. He toyed with the ship and crew, offering supernatural powers to Riker and transporting them all on a whim to meet up with the potent and dangerous Borg.

Even this seemingly recalcitrant race have rules and Q fell out of favour with the continuum for spreading chaos in his wake. He was disciplined for inappropriate behaviours, banished and stripped of his powers. His record was only expunged as the result of a surprisingly selfless act. Empowered anew, Q returned to plague Captain Picard on future occasions and even Commander Sisko on Deep Space Nine had to endure a visit from him. All captains in Starfleet have been briefed on these meddlesome beings.

Romulans
Romulans are the descendants of Vulcans who chose to exile themselves instead of adopting logic. Humans and Romulans have always been hostile towards one another. Now tired of the antagonism and growing curious about their Vulcan ancestry, members of a growing underground movement on Romulus , led by Ambassador Spock, are learning the ways of logic.

The Sikari
Two generations ago the Sikari inhabited the surface of their planet. They were attacked and decimated in less than an hour by an unrecognised race. A few colonists escaped to the mines and have lived there ever since, in constant fear that the enemy will return. They have mastered camouflage and seem to appear out of the rock. Although understandably defensive, they are very curious and thirsty for information.

Talaxians
Talaxians are a race of aliens indigenous to the Delta Quadrant. Almost twenty five years ago they waged a war with the Haakonian civilisation. That war ended after nearly a decade with the destruction of the Talaxian moon, Rhinax. This awful even resulted in the loss of 300,000 lives and Haakonian victory.

Talaxians (Supplemental)
A humanoid civilisation native to the planet Talax in the Delta Quadrant, the Talaxians surrendered to the Haakonian Order in 2356 after a decade-long war was ended by the deployment of the metreon cascade, a deadly weapon that killed over 300,000 Talaxians on Rinax. The Haakonian occupation sent many Talaxians fleeing from the planet, and consolidated the Talaxian presence among Delta Quadrant itinerant trader. An emotional people, the Talaxian people observe Prixin, an annual holiday to celebrate their families, and on the death of a close friend or relative, Talaxians traditionally mourn the deceased for a full week.

The Think Tank
According to Kurros, the Think Tank is a small group founded more than 100 years before the encounter with Voyager by Bevox, a large Bio-plasmic lifeform which prefers a variable gravity environment. Kurros likens the Think Tank to a group of explorers who seek out challenges in the form of problems to be solved, be they technological, biological, social, or even artistic. However, the group's motivations are not strictly altruistic, as they always demand payment for their services. Payment usually takes the form of whatever the client's culture has that is unique. Although this can be as harmless as the recipe for a particular soup or a star chart, it is not unknown for the payment to be much higher indeed.

The Trabe
Once the scholars and the artists of the Delta Quadrant, the Trabe were renowned and revered for their accomplishments. However, they had a dark secret, hidden from other inhabitants of their known world. They kept the Kazon, a wild and ferocious people, in slavery, confining them to set areas where unauthorised Trabe and particularly children, were not allowed to go. The enslaved lived under appalling conditions until on day, thirty years ago, they broke out and escaped to rampage the Delta Quadrant.

The Vical
The Vical are a nation who take great pride in their tradition of distant and fearless exploration. Inquisitive by nature, they go forth in tiny ships containing only pilot and navigator. Their inborn curiosity overrides any sense of self preservation and the thrill of the unknown proved the courage to take daring chances. They embroider their exploits when recounting them to anyone who will listen but are intolerant of those who go too far with embellishments.

Vidiians
A humanoid race, indigenous to the Delta Quadrant, who are suffering from a most dreadful plague, a virus which is eating them alive. Although they have medical technology which is very advanced in the fields of transplantation and grafting, they have yet to discover a cure. Relentlessly, they continue their search for salvation.

Vulcans
Vulcans live most of their lives suppressing their natural, emotions responses in favour of logical thought. They are the true intellectuals of the Federation. After a period of barbaric war, the Vulcans began to reject emotion when clear, logical thought led them to peace. Surak taught the Vulcans logic and that conflict could be avoided if both sides remained calm, not allowing emotion to cloud their judgement. Those who did not want to accept this new way of life settled on the planets of Romulus and Remus and continued to practice their savage ways.
