Answering a distress call, Janeway and her crew are shocked to find a holographic killing-ground filled with dead Hirogen hunters. When the killers turn out to be holographic freedom fighters created by Voyager's own technology, the Doctor's loyalty to his organic crewmates is tested to the extreme.

Kidnapped and trapped on a ship with holographic freedom fighters, Torres and the Doctor become the prey in a hunt by two warships filled with deadly Hirogen hunters. While Voyager searches for them, Torres and the Doctor watch their holographic host develop a religious zeal that leads to the murder of non-holograms.
