Tuvok entered Starfleet Academy in 2259. Upon graduation from the Academy, he was assigned to USS Excelsior under Captain Hikaru Sulu. Tuvok served as junior science officer until 2298 where he resigned from Starfleet to engage himself in civilian activities for 51 years. He later returned to Starfleet in 2349 and was assigned to U.S.S. Wyoming. In 2351, Tuvok was transferred to Starfleet Academy as an instructor. In 2367, Tuvok met Captain Kathryn Janeway for the first time when she selected him as her tactical officer. In 2369, he was briefly assigned for several months to Jupiter Station, writing letters to keep in contact with Kathryn Janeway. He taught archery science for few years.

In 2371, Tuvok is assigned as an undercover operative to infiltrate Maquis, was lost aboard Maquis ship commanded by Chakotay in the Badlands. Captain Kathryn Janeway and her crew of Voyager was sent to look for the Maquis ship Tuvok was on. But while investigating there, the Voyager and it's crew also lost contact with Starfleet on stardate 48307.5 and Starfleet presumed all hands were lost when both ships, the U.S.S. Voyager and the Maquis ship were violently swept into the Delta Quadrant. Tuvok rejoined the crew as tactical officer and security chief.

He would have been assigned to the position of Kathryn Janeway's First Officer to replace her First Officer who was originally assigned to the Voyager who died in the first encounter with the Caretaker but, Captain Janeway had decided to make the Maquis commander, Chakotay, to occupy that position to build trust between the Starfleet crew and the new Maquis crew.

In 2371, Tuvok received Captain's censure for defying her orders. He and B'Elanna Torres secretly exchanged Federation cultural materials with planet Sikaris natives for trajector technology which could return Voyager quickly back to the Alpha Quadrant but it was incompatible with Voyager's systems.

Aboard Voyager Tuvok gave basic Starfleet training to four new Maquis and taught Kes, native to Delta Quadrant and Ocampan, Vulcan mental disciplines.
