Neelix is a native of the Delta Quadrant. He was a trader of junk and debris. As a child, Neelix lived with his parents and younger brothers on Rinax, a moon of Talax. Neelix was very close to Alixia, one of his sisters. Then Rinax was devastated by the mentreon cascade attack by the Haakonian Order Neelix's entire family, including Neelix survived because he was and Talax at the time, fleeing form military duty in a war.

Neelix came aboard Voyager when Captain Janeway and her crew were flung into the Delta Quadrant. Shortly after the arrival in the Delta Quadrant he meets the crew of Voyager and helped Captain Janeway to help deal with the Kazon-Ogla in 2371.

When he joined the crew of Voyager, Neelix appointed himself as the ship's cook and as the Chief Morale Officer. He turned Captain Janeway's mess hall into a kitchen and her private dining room into a storage room.

On stardate 48532.4, Neelix's lungs were surgically removed and were implanted into a Vidiian. He was temporarily kept alive using holographic lungs until Kes donated one of her lungs to be implanted into Neelix's body. In 2372, Tuvok and Neelix were involved in a transporter accident at a molecular level which causes the two to form a new being called Tuvix.
