During her years in Starfleet Academy, Janeway studied Science. Here, she studied for a doctoral degree in quantum cosmology.
In 2354, with the rank of Ensign, she was assigned to the USS Al-Batani (U.S.S. Icarus ) serving under Admiral Owen Paris to study massive compact halo objects in deep space-based on a thesis proposal she wrote on such things. As well as this study, the mission was also to spy on the Cardassians; to gain information about the dangerous alien race. But it was this part of the mission that saw Admiral Paris, Lieutenant Justin Tighe and Janeway taken prisoner by the Cardassians during their mission to one of the moons of Urtea II. But with the help of Lieutenant Tighe, she aided their escape. This saw Janeway to receive a commendation for bravery, leading to a recommendation for Janeway to change divisions from the Science to the Command division by the Admiral.
She transferred to the command division and undertook her first mission as Captain in 2366. Her mission was a six month venture into the Beta Quadrant and was reviewed for her performances.
In 2370, Janeway was assigned to her new ship the U.S.S. Voyager. A year later in 2371, she recruited ex-Starfleet and convicted Maquis, Lieutenant Tom Paris to help search for Lieutenant Tuvok-her long-time Lieutenant and friend-who was undercover on the Maquis ship that is lost in the Badlands. While in search for the Maquis, the crew of Voyager was violently swept into the Delta Quadrant killing her First Officer, her helm and a few more others and lost contact with Starfleet on stardate 48315.6. Finding that the Maquis ship captained by Chakotay was also swept into the Delta Quadrant, Captain Janeway and the Maquis Commander merged as one crew on the USS Voyager making Chakotay Captain Janeway's First Officer. Now her mission is to bring her crew home back to the Alpha Quadrant.
