Kes comes from a race called the Ocampa. Generally Kes and the Ocampan have the life span of approximately nine Terran years and at the age of two she fully mature. Kes left her underground home to explore space with the crew of Voyager in 2371, where she was captured and abused by the Kazon-Ogla. It was Neelix, with the help from the crew members of Voyager who helped rescue, Kes from that world. She was invited to join Voyager by Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Shortly after stardate 48439.7, Kes converted Cargo Bay 2 of the ship into hydroponics and airponics farm to cultivate food for the crew. When alien Vidiians stole crewman Neelix's lungs on stardate 48532.3, Kes donated one of her lungs to him. She later began training under the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram as medical assistant. She quickly became the primary nurse and medical technician in sickbay and served with distinction due to her eidetic memory and high intelligence.

Kes believed there was some truth in ancient legends that her people once had extraordinary mental power. Kes began to study Vulcan mind-control techniques with Tuvok as her mentor. In 2372, she has gained limited psycho-kinetic, extra-sensory and telepathic abilities. She also has a first-level pilot certificate which she gained through lessons with Lieutenant Tom Paris that year. In 2373, Kes was possessed by Tieran of the Ilan, who transferred his neural pattern into her brain to use her to try and take control of the Ilan government but her mental power was able to break through his control. Later that year she played the main part in the encounter with the Borg and Species 8472.
