B'Elanna Torres entered Starfleet Academy in 2359 and excelled in basic Engineering but received many demerits in other courses. In 2361 during her second year at the academy because of her aggressive personality on her Klingon heritage's behalf, Torres had dropped out. Not able to be guided by Starfleet rules, she felt she was not Starfleet material. Although, one professor, Professor Chapman did believe Torres had potential to make it as a Starfleet Officer even if he was hard on her. Professor Chapman had written a recommendation for re-admission upon re-application to Starfleet Academy in his report, if she ever decided to. Professor Chapman felt Torres's originality in her thinking would allow her to make it into the Academy.
Serving under Chakotay as engineer, in 2370, she joined the Maquis resistance on a Maquis ship that later in 2371 was lost in the Badlands. The U.S.S. Voyager, captained by Kathryn Janeway was sent into the Badlands to find the Maquis ship. But being swept into the Delta Quadrant, the U.S.S. Voyager lost contact with the Federation. Chakotay, knowing he will not survive with his small crew, they integrated with the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager. After Captain Janeway's careful decision, Torres was appointed Chief Engineer of the Voyager ahead of then, her superior Lieutenant Carey. In 2374, with her great engineering skills, she successfully adapted the Emergency Medical Hologram program to be transmitted through an alien communications array back to the Alpha Quadrant and re-established Voyager's communications with the Federation.
